Title: Learning spaces at four post-secondary institutions: exploring the sense, place and impact of space on learning.

On many days more than a hundred thousand students attend classes at the post-secondary campuses of Algonquin College, Carleton University, La Cité and the University Ottawa. These learners participate in many different types of learning activities across varied disciplines in an amazingly diverse set of learning spaces. Hunley and Schaller (2006) noted that the design of learning spaces can have a significant impact on the behaviours of our learners and teachers.

In this full day workshop, participants will have the opportunity to explore a variety of different learning spaces in Ottawa’s four largest post-secondary institutions. Each institution will showcase elements of their campuses learning spaces and address aspects like:

  1. how good design can support active learning and influence engaging teaching practices,
  2. the challenges of modernizing learning spaces
  3. interacting experiential learning
  4. creating inclusive learning spaces
  5. evaluating learning spaces

 

Participants will engage in hands on activities and discussion throughout the day relating to the different elements of learning space and the approaches taken at each institution. At the end of the workshop participants will leave with practical tools and strategies relating to learning space design and the various elements shared at each of the four institutions.

Identifying Complicity in Colonialism: Deploying Disrupting Interviews to Decolonize

“Following the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, universities across Canada are working at the institutional level to address the Calls to Action. This work illuminates the extent to which our institutions, its disciplines and our identities maintain colonial knowledge production through scholarship and teaching. Decolonizing the University requires working with individual professors to un-settle both their own and their discipline’s scholarly and/or pedagogical practices.

Informed by cross-institutional collaboration through an Education Canada EDGEs grant, this workshop explores our proposed adaptation to the Decoding the Disciplines interview (Pace & Middendorf, 2004) to help individuals identify complicit knowledge, which silently functions to reproduce settler-colonial society and its practices (Tuck and Gastambide-Fernández 2013).

Through the workshop we show how the Disrupting Interview’s introspective acts of reflection illuminates implicit colonial ideologies that are reproduced in curriculum development. These reflections offer starting points for decolonizing disciplinary knowledge and practices.

The pedagogical impact of board games on public health biology education

We examined the impact of a board game on student learning in an introductory Public Health Biology course using a mixed-methods approach. There were 151 students from the course who participated in the study. We used a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to determine the effect of the game on the outcome of the student’s assessment and we conducted six focus groups with participants to determine the impact on the boardgame on their learning. The results of the RCT study indicated a lower rate of students receiving negative scores, which illustrated no effect between the pre- and post-test and a wider range of results. The qualitative results from the focus groups suggested that the board game enhanced retention, active learning and improved confidence of participants in answering questions about the course content.

Teaching Strategies for the “Learning Mind”

To what degree do our teaching strategies and habits align with the processes occurring within our learners’ minds? Through the development of a conceptual working model of the learning mind, this workshop aims to develop understanding of how the learning mind operates so that participants can implement teaching strategies likely to lead to effective and lasting learning. By the end of the workshop, participants should have developed a simple working model of the learning mind, should be able to describe the operating characteristics of the learning mind’s essential components, will have practiced explaining why recommended strategies promote effective operation of the learning mind, and should be able to anticipate potential challenges in implementing recommended teaching strategies. The workshop uses an instructional model based on the Kolb experiential learning cycle beginning with reflective observation of everyday experiences so that the workshop content is accessible to instructors from all disciplines.

2.Celebrating Outcomes of Teaching Philosophies of 3M Teaching and HERDSA Fellows: What Can We Learn and Apply

This opportune pre-conference three-hour workshop offers a collaborative and reflective experience for educational developers, educators and university administrators involved in supporting the ‘future-ready’ capabilities of academics and student cohorts through their teaching and learning journeys. Our research findings highlight the significant values of the teaching philosophy (TP) as it supports personal, collegial and institutional development. The TP recognizes the individual educational moments of significance as well as major milestones of achievements for celebration. Participants will be guided through reflective conversations that share aspects of a TP as a capacity building, future-ready resource. The workshop learning activities are designed to expose participants to practical aspects of our research findings and offers strategies to set out beliefs, values and goals for development and future celebrations through the TP. Participants will leave with tools to utilize at their institutions to celebrate academics’ TPs and the teaching and learning journeys that surround the TP.

Indigenous Learning Bundles: Engaging STLHE and 3M Teaching Fellows and Students in Continuing Reconciliation Work

Building on the 2019 3MTruth and Reconciliation Retreat for 3M Teaching and Student Fellows in Winnipeg, this project is a research and leadership opportunity for 3M students working with 3M teaching fellows toward classrooms that recognize and respect Indigenous approaches to teaching and learning. The project ensures the place of this important commitment to ongoing reconciliation in 3M’s and STLHE’s respective 35th and 40th year anniversaries. Highlighting the leadership, perspectives, and insights of students, the project comprises a pre-conference Interactive Workshop featuring a presentation by Professor Kahente Horn-Miller (Kanien:keha’ka /Mohawk) and her colleagues about Indigenous Learning Bundles, and participant discussion groups to imagine new institutional structures for higher education. The bundles, and their role in decolonizing the classroom, will be the focus of the 3M students’ research in preparing for their leadership roles in the workshop. Anticipated outcomes include concrete examples of moving toward active reconciliation in post-secondary settings.

Building Multimodal, Nonlinear, and Interactive Learning Experiences: A Deep Dive into the Tapestry Tool

The Tapestry Tool (tapestry-tool.com) is a newly-developed learning tool created by University of British Columbia students, faculty, and staff. It allows for non-linear, dynamic, easily updatable, and student-centered content. The Tapestry Tool is being designed to allow for student/faculty co-creation of knowledge, to engage students with their learning community, and to enhance learning experiences across disciplines.

This workshop begins with coverage of both the theoretical underpinnings for the Tool, and several use cases for the Tapestry Tool. You will then get a chance to discuss other possible use cases in small groups. Following that, you will create your own “Tapestry,” either individually or in a small group. You’ll see non-linear and interactive learning design in action, and walk out with new perspectives on online teaching and learning.
